From the alt-right to misogynistic incels and AI-made memes, the internet has enabled the dissemination of hate in novel and amplified forms. This chapter discusses how platform logics, engagement-driven algorithms, and networked media can exacerbate the spread and uptake of toxic content and extremist ideologies. To counter these dynamics, interventions such as content moderation, user reporting, and AI-driven detection have been implemented but each pose their own set of limitations. Governments and NGOs have also sought regulatory and educational approaches, yet challenges remain in balancing free speech and hate regulation. Ultimately, understanding the appeal and mechanisms of digital hate is essential for developing strategies that foster inclusive and civil online spaces while mitigating harm to marginalized communities and broader societal cohesion.
