8 channel generative sound, coltan, packaging
2014
Cloud is a sonic tapestry composed of alerts, UI sounds and ringtones drawn from our contemporary messaging software: iOS, Android and Blackberry, Windows Phone and Outlook. Cascading over each other, these chimes and crystalline tones play a key role in supporting the notion of a fluid, modern communication experience that is both immaterial and effortless.
The work is accompanied by a piece of coltan (columbite-tantalite) shipped from Pakistan and displayed in the original packaging. The tantalum from the ore is used to manufacture capacitors, used in mobile phones and other electronic devices. With limited sources such as the DRC, allegations of military financing and precarious mining conditions, coltan borders on conflict substance status.
